I'm just wondering why..........
a new avatar is retroactive to every one of your past posts but a new sigline is not.

Because that's the way the software works.
  Everything in that left column, avatar, status, etc, is current. Posts, on the other hand, are a snap shot in time. The software doesn't update all of the posts when you change something. That would take a lot of processing and make the server very slow. The avatars update easily. But if your signature line got a lot longer or a lot shorter, it could change the paging in a thread. Then links wouldn't work and bunch of other stuff get's a lot harder and a lot slower to do.
