fiberglass gas tank
Picked up a very cool fiberglass tank for my winter project, only to find out that ethanol will deteriorate the fiberglass....
Been doing some research on coatings. Anyone have any experience / opinions? Am I better off moving on and finding a different tank? |

Re: fiberglass gas tank
Heres what airtech suggests for their FG tanks.
Can I use pump gas in your racing fuel tanks? Modern pump gas is pretty crappy stuff. It contains a load of oxygenizers, fuel injector cleaners, ethanol, ketones and other additives that can wreak havoc on a fiberglass tank. Even though we use a high-end aircraft quality vinylester sealer on all of our tanks, it is possible a reaction may occur between pump gas and the tank liner. We therefore recommend that anyone planning on using pump gas in any of our tanks first coat the inside of the tank with a fuel tank liner like Kreem . Furthermore, he following brands were recommended by experienced customers: Caswell Plating KBS Coatings Last but not least, always use a fuel filter. I use POR-15 on rusted metal tanks and it works great. |

Re: fiberglass gas tank
In the UK fiberglass tanks have been illegal for road use since the 70s.
Draw your own conclusions.

Tanks for the info guys!
I've been referred to Caswell from a boat forum, but have no clue if the guy is trustworthy. Kwick, have you personally used that brand of sealant before? Not doubting, just asking..... Also heard that a fuel filter is of no use for this problem. Again only hearsay though... Tanks again. |

Re: fiberglass gas tank
Kreem is known for its super crappy life span and its awesome ability to come off in sheets to eventually make its way into your Fuel filter if you install one, or on into the carbs. Stay away from that stuff.

Re: fiberglass gas tank
Also worth noting, I own one of Airtech's race fuel tanks for my mini bike. The fiberglass underpan seperated from the top half of the shell in 7 months time. I never left fuel in it, and it was used for 6 races a month feb - august. After the races in a day I drained it, running a mixture of 93 pump gas and U4 VP race fuel. When prepping the bike for month #8, I removed the tank to find the underside of the shell siting on top of the frame brace.
Contacted airtech only to be told that the U4 was the cause of the problem and that there is no warranty on the item. Live and learn I suppose. |
